Pump seal came out!!!

I replaced the front pump seal on my transmission 800 miles ago and all seemed good up until yesterday. While cruising down the highway only going about 60mph I saw a lot of smoke in my rearview mirror. After pulling over and looking the car over I saw oil pouring the the inspection cover so I had it towed home. I pulled the inspection cover and looked up and it looks like the front pump seal has came out.

Does anyone have any ideas what may have caused this? I do not believe that I installed the seal incorrectly but it is possible I guess.

Did you drill he drainback hole and use loctite on the seal?

They also make a seal retainer. Not sure how well it works. I use one since they are inexpensive, but I also drill the drain back hole.

Where can I get the seal retainer? I did not drill out the hole but would like to do that if it is possible to do without taking the transmission apart. Could you give me instructions on how to do it please. I did not use locktite but will give it a try. Would I use the same kind of locktite that I use on bolt threads or something else?

i had same prob about 1yr ago put lock ring on no more trouble buddy told me common prob can get ring from any trans supply store i think 700r4 takes same ring i think

Maybe the bushing walked out into the seal pushing it out.

thats what happend to the last one i fixed.. the bushing was trashed..

Thanks for all the great info guys. I picked up the seal retainer today from Aamco transmissions and will be pulling the trans this weekend. I will let you know what I find after I get it out.
