does anyone have pics or good places on where to put these in around the motor, what i mean is are there any holes already ready to just put in the gauges and last i know that mech is better than electrical, but for water temp and oil pressure does it really matter as much????

i am not sure about the water temp gauge, but i can kind of help you with your oil.

i have the autometer Z-series electrical oil pressure gauge. i got this one because it matched my VDO boost gauge that i have mounted on my Pillar.

to wire its its pretty simple, two wires, a white one and a ground go for your little light in the gauge, so that can go as a matter of prefrence. then you have three more wires. one goes to an 'ignition' source down in the fuse box, another goes to a good ground (yes, for this gauge there are two grounds) and then a wire that goes to the oil pressure sending unit.

the oil pressure sending unit goes on the passenger side of the block right by the hose that comes out of the water pump. its towards the bottom, can be a real PITA to get it out. it mounts onto a T right next to the turbo feed line. it might be easier to diconnect that lower hose from the water pump to get to it though, dont really remember. i know the sending unit will not thread into the block, you have to use one of the many adapters they send you with the gauge.

there maybe another place to hook it up, i dont know, because you have to take out the factory sending unit which controls that precious idiot light. i just left my plug unplugged (for the light) and tucked it up some where, the light doesent come on, so i would never know the difference, now i dont know if you want to keep the idiot light working, because if you do then the way i described wont work...

i think i am done....

Do a search...This subject was just discussed maybe lastweek?
And I'm sure afew other times...

During last week's headgasket change, I added oil pressure and water temp gauges (Autometer electrical, white-faced). I T'd off the oil line, where the factory sender goes in. So now, my factory sender is pointing towards the oil line right above the filter, and the Autometer sending unit is standing vertically, alongside the water pump. Directly above that on the intake, I placed another brass T for the water temperature. This time, the factory one is vertical, and the Autometer is horizontal. I don't think I could've gotten either of these on, without the turbo off. In both cases, I used the shortest brass nipples that I could find (Lowe's). I then used CAT-5 wire (sharing a pair for each gauge) to run into the gauges. From inside, I had to splice into the lighting system to illuminate the gauges; I just used the wire that goes to the shift indicator. I then ran an ignition wire from the IGNITION terminal on the left side of the fuse block. Finally, I set up all the grounds.
Hope this helps.

I always thought mechanicals more accurate, and if you start to drop volts, fautly alternater, lose wire, etc. I would assume your accuracy would suffer.

Maybe 20 years ago. ;)
The new gauges are as good as mechanicals. And have ya ever seen an oil cap line break? WHAT a mess!
