I pulling off the cat tomorrow and putting on a test pipe for the track.
Will I see an increase in boost without touching the wastegate actuator, or does the benefit simply come from a more free flowing exhaust?
S.

I just put on my hooker exhaust and replaced the cat with that nice pipe they provided and I got more boost out of my turbo. I don't have my boost gauge installed yet :( (its actually staring at me right now) so numbers are questionable because of the stock led gauge. I can tell you according to the leds it went from ~15 to a red led at wot (I wish i had numbers for you  ) and was definately making more boost because I had a lot more knock then usual. Granted thats a big jump.. from stock to no cat and aftermarket exhaust but I figured I'd give my 2 cents. A friend of mine (sleeper-6) lost 4 mph in the big end @ englishtown when he put his cat on to pass emmissions. I haven't been out to the track since the change so I have no new numbers to compare. HTH

Boost will likely go up, the car will spool quicker and leave harder. Wheels spin may become a bigger problem and your mph should go up in the 1/4 by atleast 2 mph, probably more.

Unless you have a torch to help remove the old stock cat I'd expect you to have a lot of fun trying to get the cat loose from the downpipe. Oh yeah, I remember that being a lot of fun!

My testpipe pushed my exhaust up into the floorboards under the passenger seat. exhast shop did a crappy job of hanging it. What a waste of money.

I bought a used stainess ATR stock replacement downpipe and test pipe and threw the welded together downpipe/cat in the trash (where it belonged). I had to jack the back end of the car up 18" to get the damn thing out in one piece. Next time I try that on a car, it will be in two pieces, even if I have to rent a sawsall.

You will have more boost, better acceleration and better fuel economy. Any restriction taken out of the exhaust should get you those three things all the time, especially in a turbo car.

I don't recall a significant change in boost. But I did get better spool, > 3 tenths, and > 3mph in the 1/8.

Ok here we go!!

1. Boost was set at 23# with test pipe on.

2. Didnt touch a thing.

3. Took off the test pipe and installed a Random Techs High Flow
Cat, for smog that day.

4. Drove down to Smog Busters (with boost still set@23#) like i
said i didnt touch a thing.

5. Opened her up.

6. Peddle mashed to the floor.

7. Boost would not go past 19-20# (one of those two cant
remember, but on of them)

8. Proof of what the so called (High Flow Cat) did when i installed
it.

9. Bottom line- i lost about 4# of boost when the cat was
installed.

10. Another bottom line

11. Cats suck!!

12. And so does 91 octane fuel:mad:

13. But keep in mind i have a hooker free flow exhaust with
Aero Chamber Mufflers:D and a V4. That little combo will
also add up.

14. And yes the 44 spools like a son of a ??

hope that helps

jojo

Okay...
The test pipe is on and so far, I don't notice any real increase in boost. However, the turbo is spooling quicker and it "feels" like it's got more ass in it.
Tonight will be the test. ;)

They say that if the butt dyno registers a change, it's at least 2 tenths. :D
