Sorry for the long story.....

I had a pump failure a few weeks ago. Before the failure, my transmission almost always barked the 1-2 shift, and was firm even if it didn't bark. When the pump failed, it pushed fluid thru the front seal and on the crossover pipe, therefore I knew immediately there was a problem. I shut it down and had it towed so I would not damage anything more.

I took the transmission to a local reputable shop and he replaced the pump with a new HD pump. He used the existing pressure control valve(s) and indicated that there were no signs that the rest required rebuild (clean fluid, no residue, etc ).

Now, the WOT 1-2 shift is REALLY sloppy. I have adjusted the TV cable and the part throttle shifts are firm. I can get it to bark 1-2 at 1/2 throttle, but at WOT I can feel it slowly engaging. I also used type F fluid this time thinking it might firm things up a little. I called him up and he said there is no explanation why it shifts differently and I agree.

As far as I know, it's all stock. Should I just put in a shift kit and be done with it? What else is there to do? Basically speaking, everything runs perfect except for the WOT shift.

TIA.

maybe they installed a smaller pr spring or boost valve we have the kit to make it bark .anyway check your vbody and make sure they reinstalled what you had before .www.ckperformance,com

Sounds like cavitation to me. Pour some more fluid in it and try it. The filters are known to suck air around the edge, when you floor it the fluid goes to the back and the front edge of the filter is exposed to air. Over fill it 1 quart and see if it helps.

Maybe my tranny sux but bone stock trannys do not bark on the 1-2 shift. Not a big selling point for the masses. It must have had some form of a kit added along the way. I would get more info on the pump the mechanic installed, and run it by Bruce or Chris

A nice stock tranny will scratch the crap outta the 1-2, my 87 did when stock and so does the 86 and it has 149,000. I'd go with the wrong pr spring installed or something not installed correctly. I know a friend that had his filter crack and it would slip at WOT. Cavitation sounds like a posibility as well.

I must have missed the stories of guys driving GN's off the showroom floor barking them down the street when they hit 2nd.

Unfortunately I was 12 then so I have to take peoples word if they say the shifts were THAT firm from the factory

I think that there are instructions on gnttype.org, but there's more.

Basically, the TV cable is mounted to the upper intake on the drivers side and attaches to the top of the throttle linkage. There is a little "button" on the drivers side of it. If you push the "button" in, you can slide the cable back and forth. What you do is slide the cable back toward the firewall. Then you get in the car and mash the pedal and the cable will "snap" back into the proper place.

I have found that this gets mine in the ballpark. After I do this, I go for an easy spin. Not WOT. If the shift is too sloppy, than you can "fine tune" the adjustment by backing the cable up 1 notch at a time. I'm convinced that when you mash the pedal, the "snap" is several notches instead of one at a time.

Keep in mind that this is not for WOT adjustments.

I remember driving my first GN off the showroom floor brand new in 1987:)
I also remember going sideways down the street as soon as the boost came up:eek:
But I can't remember barking 1st to 2nd with the stock trans:confused:

Altzheimer's sucks:p

scotty it sounds like you have the cable right .this is a calibration error more than likely and if the guy who did the job cant straighten it out maybe he should sell hot dogs cause he wasnt worthy of taking your money.we fu&% up here and there at ck but we always make things right with the customer .www.ckperformance.com
