Question about shaft play

Hey guys got my turbo off today since the motor is out of the car for a rebuild, and I noticed it has a substancial amount of in and out play but none side to side.
Is this normal for turbos?
I also noticed their is a bit of white soot build up on the one exhaust side.

Also noticed on the intake side the blades have some marks, not sure what thats from.

I Did the same thing with my car last year. The white stuff is a good sign, just normal combustion gases passing by. As for my shaft, it moved from side to side slightly but not in and out. My turbo still puts out 20 psi no problem and no noise...no bad noise that is. The nicks on the blades are just from dirt, unless they are bent I would run it.

Here are the service manual specs.
Max radial=0.003-0.006 Inch
Max thrust=0.001-0.003 Inch
I never measured mine, and I'm sure it's above these specs.
I was not going to rebuild mine, it makes more sense to upgrade. But they are not cheap!

No. If you can feel it with oil in it it's more than .003. You will feel the radial play because of the distance from the bearing(s) at the end of the shaft. If you were to extend the turbine shaft outward further the play would become more and more. that's not the actual clearance though.
