Question for a friend... Modulator on side of trans?

Hey Everyone-
A friend asked me a 2004r question today, and I am in no way a transmission guy, so I'm forwarding it to you: He wants to know what the modulator on the driver side rear of the tranny does. I'm not sure what car this tranny came out of, can anybody give us some help? Thanks!

There is no "modulator" on the side of a 200-4R. Are you sure it's a 200-4R?

200r4 has no removable tailshaft

Are you sure it isn't a 700-4R? There's a cover for the governor on the drivers side near the tail shaft.
