I took my Buick out to get some fresh gas in it this afternoon and when I got back pulled into the driveway and the shifter wouldn't go into park. It felt really strange and when I pushed it a little I heard something snap! Still couldn't get it into park so I put the parking brake on and tried to turn the key to the off position and it would only go as far as the "run" position and the key came right out. I pulled the console up and found the shifter cable snapped and the little J rod for the shifter had the end that sits in the gear retainer broke off.....crap. So I ran up to Kirbans and grabbed a new cable but can't seem to figure out how the clips are positioned to keep the cable where it's supposed to be? Also, any ideas why I can't get the ignition switch to the off position?

rotate the column behind the steering wheel right by the dash
reach behind and twist it counterclockwise

the tab on the clip goes away from the bracket that the cable slides through
at the trans end push cable completelty through bracket and put clip on side of bracket toward motor
on shifter undo the shifter from the floor (4 10mm bolts) slide shifter onto cable and put back bolts
cable clip goes onto cable on the side toward rear of car

Awesome, thanks for the help. I rotated the collar and got the ignition switch to the off position. Got the cable in place but had to order the J rod for the shifter
