I had dextron three in the trans and then changed to type f fluid and then changed the filter again and went back to dextron 3 with mercon again. Will this be a problem mixing the fluids together they are aleast the same amacco product.Any advice would be great thanks.
The trans is a 400 bop trans

I would never use the tractor fluid in a daily driver. It is more of a necessity for use in transbrake-equipped trannies as its real advantage is its resistence to break down in extreme heats.

But since the original poster didn't specify what he will use it for, we are both just offering opinions....:)

Thanks guys

Thanks alot. What about the paper filter instead of just a screen filter. Will the paper one be ok?Or should i drop the pan again and install a screen one next time?

The paper element filter

MAY {not always, but sometimes} cause a slight whine at idle when cold. It doesn't hurt anything, it's just annoying.

The 424 won't hurt anything on the street.

Type f and dextron 3 mix won't hurt anything either.
:D

What's this tractor fluid that's been mentioned ???

Who's it made by ???

What serious racers are using it ??

Tractor hydralic does extend break down somewhat. We us it in a mix with all our rebuilds here. The 424 tractor hydralic is made by quite a few oil companies. We use Chevron.

isnt there an issue of running tractor fluid and locking up a conv...doesnt that lead to lockup clutch plate issues?
daily driver type setups....

To quote a tranny guru on this board. "toilet paper is for wiping your a$$, and napkins are for wiping your mouth."

Ford type F fluid is the way to go.

Type F is recommended by CK performance, are you saying they are wrong?

I would say modern Ford transmissions are about the best available by the Big Three.

Obviously GM is still stuck trying to use the basic 700-r4 with a myriad of upgrades, but still having sun shell failures, etc..
Having worked at a large GM dealership recently I've seen the failures coming in the door, OFTEN.

Chrysler jsut doesn't have there stuff right either. GM and Chrysler transmissions are lucky to make it to the 100K mile mark these days it seems.

Ford however with the E4OD, AOD-E, etc.. seems to be having decent luck as far as I know...

Haven't heard of too may trans failures in the Mustangs, Lightnings, etc....

I use and recommend Dexron in my builds, however Type F is not going to kill a trans.
It is rougher on the friction materials, causes them to break down faster. But... We're not expecting a racing trans to have frictions last 10 yrs anyway.
I had some literature somewhere on Type F and friction materials..
You can also check with major clutch manufactureres such as Alto, BW, and Raybestos and see what they recommend... it ain't F...

IMO,
I have noticed Type F to cause some "varnishing" if not changed often. Not sure if it is the heat, repeated thermal cycling, whatever.

I've played with the tractor fluid mix. Seems to work fine for me too.
I don't have long term results yet so we'll see.

the tractor fluid is in, no problems so far!only problem is that its clear and hard to read the dipstick

Mike,
I just checked my PM for the first time in MANY months.
I have unchecked PM's from over 6 months ago! LOL

Anyway,
the info you requested I only really have in a sketch form. I can get copies and mail it to you. MY scanner quit awhile back.

I have info on the BQ, BRF, and a BY I think it was.

Will do, this will give it a nice red shade i hope
