I had an 11" KB installed but cracked the hub, rebuilt tranny in the meantime, now ready for the convertor. I have an original D5 that came out of the car 6yrs ago. I assume it worked ok when removed since the car was driveable.
Is there a way to check these? Do I need to get it flushed or can it be?
It is a mostly stock setup so I thought the D5 might be the best selection (and cheapest) or I could get the KB fixed for about 150.00.
Please advise which way to go or if you have other suggestions that would be great too.

Anyone got any advice on this. Tell me about using the D5 and cleaning/checking methods. Thanks

paul

the only way to check a converter is to have it cut open. if the d5 is bad it will hurt the new trans. if its good then your good to go. but why take a chance after paying good money to have the trans rebuilt. is the kb a kenne bell?

The TQ that the hub cracked was a kenne bell. I hate to have a possibly good stock converter cut apart if it isn't needed. There is no other to tell how the condition is?
I cannot afford to spend the money on a new one so maybe I would just have the KB repaired.

paul

kenne bell converter is made by the converter shop in lake havasu az. you can call rusty. then send it to them for repair.

CK has restalled D5's for $295.
I`m using one in my 385 sbc I' m happy with it. It will stall to 2900 & has less than 10% slip on top.

LVGN, do you have a phone # for them?

Jim, would it be worth me just getting my D5 restalled or buy one already done? This is for a mostly stock application.

Thanks guys.

paul

I have no idea what it costs to have one done, but the $295 isn't bad for one that's already done.

Jim

Paul, the safest way for you to go is with a new unit. The one CK has for $295 is a good unit plus Chris is fairly close to you there. The next best is getting your D-5 cut open and cleaned and inspected. I would hate to see you cut this corner and have it end up trashing all your hard work on getting this trans done in the first place. This is a very important step. Make sure it is cleaned at the least.

Mark

If I was to have someone cut open my D-5, what exactly do they inspect and clean? Are there any downsides to consider by having it cut open? I assume they would rebalance the assembly.

I don't want to have anything screwed up by doing this especially if it is a perfectly good converter. But I guess this just verifies that. What is the typical cost to clean and inspect?
