They charge you like a dollar for a bid and bid you put a penny on that item. Auction work like normal and the person with the highest bid wins. So if a winning item is 1.18 then the company get 118.00, plus 1.18 and shipping. The company subtracts the cost of the item and the upkeep costs. Some say these sites fix it so the item gets bidded by bots so the item doesn't go for too cheep. Different sites can be different, but they all are mostly the same. Bid at your own risk.
