My car on the rear right side is making a weird "clunking" noise while driving. It gets progressively louder & faster as speed increases. I haven't driven the car in 2 weeks. It seemed to drive fine before then. The weird thing is when I brake it the noise goes away immediately. At first I thought it was just because I was slowing down to stop & the noise was decreasing. So I tried a "harder" brake at cruising speeds (just for a second or two) & the noise immediately stopped. However, it would picked by up again when I released the brake. I don't know if that makes any sense. But it was just something I noticed while driving. It's the first time Ive noticed it so I thought I'd post here for help before going further. Also, I noticed the right side of the differential was a lil' wet as well (where axle meets). No drips on ground though.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Time to pull that drum and see what you have. If it shows leakage you probably are in for a wheel cylinder but it sounds like something is definately rubbing and that isn't good.

Check every single suspension bolt, lug nut, and U-joint bolts you can find. Grab the pinion and try and move it. There should be zero perceptible in-and-out (giggity) or up and down movement. Pop the drums and look at all the brake hardware and pull the cover too. The magnet might have a clue for you.

Seems like a bearing.
When you brake the pads take the axle load out of the bearing.
Hows yor real axle lube?

Thank you all for the great advice! I haven't got a chance to look into it yet.

Bring it by Anthony, hopefully it is not an axle bearing?

Nick, I will contact you & see what time is best.

Earl, Thanks for those suggestions. I will look into all that!

I found the problem. I have no dang idea how in the world this happened, but I was missing 4 lug nuts on the front right wheel & 3 studs were gone too. I had only one lug nut holding the wheel on. SMH! I'm honeslty thrown for a loop as to how this happened. I'm very thankful my wheel didn't fall off while I was driving & I've definitely THANKED the man upstairs several times for watching over me & pulling over to look at the car when I did.

Lug nuts coming off and studs missing/broken is a sure sign of a bent wheel.

Damn... make a habit of walking around the car before using it!!

I will from now on. Some people think someone might have messed with it without me knowing. Cuz I did park it in at my girl friend's apt complex one night. It's covered & lit & a gated community. But still U never know.

Here is the loan stud and what it did to the stud hole

All the holes were like this or worse

I had to repair it in the parking lot and ran into issues due to the studs not setting tight in the hole now. It actually wore the hole out bigger. So now I have to replace the rotor. But I was still able to tighten them snug enough to get it home. Luckily I wasn't too far away. I was nervous as heck driving it home tho.

Is it just me or so those holes look threaded???

The studs made impressions like that when either the lugnuts fella off or someone took them off. So I think the pressure & movement from the wheel against the Studs created the grooves.

I am really confused as to how that happened. All other wheels & lug its were in tact.

I knew someone who had work done at Wallymart. Mechanic forgot to tighten the lugnuts and her wheel fell off going 65 on the expressway.

Well, I guess fortunately for me, my car was scheduled to go into shop for a suspension overhaul. Will just end up replacing the whole rotor since the stud holes are shot.
