Rear End Oil..

Ok, How do you fill the rear end oil? I have a TA Cover and the fill hole smack in the middle of the rear.. Do they make a certain funnel.. Also What wt oil??? Thanks Guys

You could always use the stock fill hole. I use a short piece of tubing wire tied to the nipple on the gear oil bottle putthe tube in teh hole and fill till it just runs out. Heat the oil first if its cool out thatll help the flow.

Also, don't fill to the TA cover fill hole, that's too much. Pull the plug from your stock fill hole and add fluid until it comes out, any more and your rear will be over filled.

What I do.... And, I poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle, once it's up in place. drains much faster.

I have a TA cover also, just filled it the other day. I set three bottles of 80/90w gear oil on the floor register and let the furnace heat them over night. It took all three. But, I am curious about over fill. I did add the posi additive first.

That is likely 1 qt too much. The stock 8.5" rear takes a smidge under 2 qts.

Due to the prodigious amounts of torque these modified engines make I went with the heavier oil. IIRC, it was something like 90W-140 (too cold outside to go check the bottle). I really did go back and forth for a while on which to use, and decided on the heavier stuff.

As for filling the rear, as Turbo Nasty mentioned place a short section of 3/8" fuel line over the pour spout. And do retain it, I dropped one into the rear once, no fun needing to pull the cover to retrieve it.

After that I would push a straight pin through the side of the hose, through the pour spout and out the other side.

They sell a gear oil pump in oriellys. It's like $8. It's a white with a hose connected to it. You remove the cone bottle cap from the gear oil and discard it. put the pump on the bottle and put the hose in the fill hole and PUMP AWAY! harbor freight sells a really nice siphering pump also. U don't even need to really get uncomfortable under the car to use it. I did the old flip the bottle upside down and squeeze trick before on my GN, never again....get the pump, the extra money is worth it believe me

the gear oil pump does make life a lot easier, but i would still warm the oil because it seems like every time i don't, my fancy $8 pump breaks and makes a mess... So is there any particular posi additive that is better for these rear ends?

I use one tube of this with 2 qts of 80w90 dino oil. Never hear any noise from the rear.

If you have a rear cover with a fill hole above the factory fill hole you could fill through the cover until it weeps out the factory fill hole.

It's much easier to access the fill hole in rear covers and I also use a rubber hose on the bottle pre-warmed which makes it easy to squeeze the oil out of the bottle.

Man, it must be cold where you guys live with all this oil pre-heating! I just cut the tip off a bottle of standard 80w90 gear oil and lift it up and jam the end into the factory hole and squeeze the bottle until it is empty. Repeat with a second bottle until it starts running out the hole. I put in a bottle of the GM posi additive before I start putting the gear oil in. I forgot the additive one time and the posi was making some noise. Noise was most evident when backing up while turning to get out of the driveway.

No, not in my case. On the contrary I just like to get it done quicker and if you warm it up it flows faster.
