Does any-one know of any other GM's that share the same 8.5" cast center section that our cars have?-Down to the casting #?

Some(if not all)of the Monte Carlo SS's had the 8.5 rear but with the 3.73 ratio........I think. :)

There were no G body montes made with the 8.5 rear. Some 442's in 86 had them, and they had the 3.73 ratio, but that is the only G body other than the GN to have that rear.

Cop car B bodys have the 8.5 but the only thing thatll work out of those rearends in our cars is the gears and posi if so equipped.I thought it was the only the Hurst Olds (not every 442) that had the 8.5 .HTH

Quite a few early 80s GM B-bodies and station wagons had 8.5 rears. Don't know if the cast center section you're inquiring about carries the same number. Also, performance varieties of late 70s Camaros and Firebirds had the 8.5 rear.

GM pick ups also have 8.5 rear centers and they fit. All monte carlos are 7.5 rears, my boss has a 85 442 with the same 8.5 used in yurbo regals.

Just a note: pickups have 30 spline axles. Stock GN is 28 spline. The truck carrier will work with aftermarket 30 spline axles.

Actually I'm hoping for the same center section, because currently I have problems with two of my rear ends. I'm planning to sweat new tubes into a new center section without altering my origionals. Thanks for your imput.

This is the only BIG problem I have with GM rears...A buddy of mine literally spun the hog head on the tubes...All of the mounting points where fine, just the pinion hit the bottom of the car and the DS almost fell out.

All of this on street tires pulling away from a stop sign...Course he had 2.41 gears, which I don't know if that made a difference or not , but I've never seen it happen before or since.

I haven't seen any company that refurbishes our rear ends like this. Everyone will build you a ford rear at a price. I still believe in my 8.5. Plus I already have too much $ invested in the rest of my rear to go to a ford.

ALL 84' Hurst Olds and 85'-87' 442's got the 8.5" with 3.73's. Same thing as the TR's but just the gearing differed...no other g-body got them but the 84'+ TR's and H.O./442's.

83' Hurst Olds did not get the 8.5". HTH.
