Rebuild, now no oil pressure

It is electrical, but I can confirm it isn't the gage. The oil light comes on when pressure goes down as well. And when there is no pressure, I loose oil to the turbo feed line.

I went out today without doing anything to the car, and started it up and pressure came right up to 70 psi. It stayed there for about a minute then went away. I'm thinking there is something wrong in the pump causing the oil level in the pump itself to drain down. I'm hoping the gouges I have in the thrust wear surface are the problem.

Does anyone have any other ideas??? I can go start the car and have oil pressure for about 30 seconds then it goes away. If I wait a few minutes then start it, the same thing. I ordered a new thrust plate for the oil pump from Ramchargers online, but it has not been shipped out yet. In fact they haven't done a thing with it by what I can tell. Ramchargers customer service seems to be lacking compared to the past. They won't even reply to my customer service requests....

I also replaced the oil pump relief valve and spring with the same results.

It almost sounds to me like the engine is pumping all the oil out of the pan, and it's not draining back quick enough. When you shut it down and let it sit for a minute or so, enough oil makes it back into the pan to get oil pressure again when you start it back up. Just my .02

I don't know what might cause that, but from what you are descibing that would be my guess.

Might be a cam bearing problem? I just did a motor for a guy who had the same problem. They could not pull out the cam. Who built the motor befor i got must of not got the bearings in right and didn't get enough oil to the cam bearings.

Just a thought.

Well, I found the problem and it's fixed... :) It turns out that not ALL oil pump thrust plate gaskets are made the same. I have a bunch of them and realized they weren't all the same. With my high flow timing cover, there is one part (near the pickup port of the thrust plate) that doesn't seal with some gaskets. I didn't realize this until I finally got a new thrust plate and noticed the difference with the gaskets.

I hope this thread helps someone else out in the future.
