I know a TA49 isnt a big upgrade compared to a 6776DBB, but I have access to one thats thrashed. Whats involved in the process? If I remember correctly, the turbo has up and down play. Will check again to be sure. Wheels and housings look okay. Im planning on going with a 60-series journal bearing, but figured what the heck.

I want to try and rebuild it myself. Just to say "I did it" and to learn something new, and to see if we can save it. I heard the rebuild kits arent too terribly expenisve.

So how hard is it realistically?

i looked and looked for kit today after finding my 200 mile ta49 took a crapola but I called Precision and great guys they are, im sending in my center housing for them to take care of

i was gonna do it myself but they want to see why it failed, so cool

Just rebuilt my TA-49 w/ kit bought online, not nearly as scary as I thought! It is very straight forward, really just replacing the internals. Seems to be holding up well. Get a kit with all the gaskets & "O" rings (it should be a *360 w/ a dynamic bearing). I soaked mine in Chem-Tool to break down all the crap. I don't know where to get compressor or turbine blades (Precision Turbo or one of the vendors) there are rebuild instructions on gnttype.org (if it is up again), I even found a Google video showing a rebuild using a G-Pop Shop kit.

HTH

D

Thanks guys. Its not a priority job, just something me and a buddy want to play around with. Im gonna get a 60-series turbo here soon I think, probably a TE-61 or a TE-62...:D

if you use a impact to disassemble it it wont tweek the shaft ,use a t bar to tighten the nut so it doesent tweek it on assembly built several dozen in the garage not hard at all just be verrryyy clean .

X2... , If you use a wrench or socket you will most likely bend the shaft and throw off the balance of the turbo. If you have access to a media blaster that would be a good time to clean up the compressor cover, backplate, wheels, and exh. housing. I prefer to pre oil everything when I'm assembling them also. Oh, and also you will need snap ring pliers to get inside the center section....good luck

p.s. this would probably be a good opportunity to make a tech article w/some good pics for everyone else who was wondering how to rebuild their ruebo

yeah theres really nothing to em, Just clock both wheel and turbine.
I went ahead and sent my center section back to Precision cause Matt wanted to see what went wrong with under 200 miles.
He replaced everything, called me and said it very well coulda been bearing was mic'd wrong.

anyway fixed and shipped back for zip, zero, nada

Like I said, its not a priority. Its just something I wanted to try and learn. Probably get to it soon after the car is put back together.

How much would it cost for them to do it, in the event I got it apart and couldnt get it back together?

Scott,

when i first called they said rebuilds start at a buck 85.

there are alot of Utube vids on rebuilding but the important thing is to mark your comp wheel and turbine as they sit in the center section providing there is a ground mark on the turbine nut, meaning it was balanced as a unit, then some spring you need to watch out for so it doesnt shoot across the room.
anyway I was prepared to do it myself untill they wanted to see what was up, i got it back in 2 days and its back together

Do you have any links for these vids? I'd like to see some other people's perspectives on these builds. I just kinda picked it up on day when watching a tech rebuild one on a ricer at a local shop
