I have a guy telling me that a GN needs a rebuild roughly every 30K miles. I find this hard to believe.

Another guy is saying that a 12 second GN is very costly to maintain, again I find this hard to believe.

Lastly, guy #1 said that the 4.1L has cooling issues due to it having siamesed cylinders.

Little help please as I am considering the future purchase of a GN.

Thanks

Don't talk to those idiots.

There are a few 12 sec. 2xx,xxx mile cars running around.

I know nothing about 4.1's

These guys are talking to may know imports but they don't know jack about a buick!

There are many engines on here with 150,000+ mile on them running deep 12's and faster.

B.Mason had 200,000+ running LOW 11's

A 12 second GN being costly to maintain? about the same as a 14 sec Gn.

Sounds like some people don't want you to get a fast car.

I don't know about the non stage 4.1 but I doubt it.

That' a lot of what I told them. I have never heard anything but great news about GN's ability to take power.

I will be getting one... just a matter of time.

In the clinical world it's called GN Envy.

12s takes investing a little, and some work but is no big deal. But if your starting with a 150K mile engine, there is no way to ignore that it already has that many miles on it. For the few moments where you can really unleash a hot GN, it's not that terrible on the engine, unless the tune is wrong.

Howdy,

Having done a ton of research on 4.1's I've never run across anyone saying they run any hotter than a conventional turbo motor. The 4.1 has many other issues but not cooling problems. With a 4.1 the main problems are a weak lifter valley, thinner decks and thinner main webs than the later 109 3.8 blocks. If you do go production 4.1, get an 8484 block, they have more reinforcement at the front and the back of the block and a bit more valley ribbing. As for 12 sec GN's being hard to maintain.... hardly, considering it doesn't take much more than elimating GM's compromises and restrictions, a slightly bigger turbo and more booste which if done properly may actually increase the reliability of the cars with higher quality components. The reliability comment likely came from GN's poping head gaskets before the widespread use of the RJC powerplate and alky which caused the cars to go lean and detonate.

Just my .01, my advice ain't worth any more,
