Hi, I am trying to remove a Kenwood radio from a Ford Tempo. I have it loose, but it wont come out the front. I dont know if it is bolted, I dont think it is, but I though most radios need those 2 clips on each side to remove them. I dont want to mess the dash up since the car is for sale, but I am buying the radio as long as I can remove it.
Anybody know if those tools are needed, and where can I get them in a hurry? I only have tomorrow morning to do it. Thanks.

You need the Ford radio removal tools. In a pinch a couple lengths of coat hanger cut to length will work. WalMart usually has the tools though.

As a note, it is a 1990 car, & the radio is regular size, not the big faceplates they have now. The only openings would be the thin slots on the sides of the radio. I just wonder if I could pry them a bit.

There should be 4 small holes in the face place, 2 per side. The tools go into the holes and it releases the clips that retain the radio. I recommend the actual tool. Works better than the coat hanger.

If it is not the stock radio, you will not need the the Ford removal tool. That is only for the stock radio that has the holes in each corner. Your Kenwood should have had the removal tools when you bought it. Well I am assuming that you bought it for the car. If that doesn't work, just get two metal, thin shims and push it betwwen the metal case and the head unit (radio) itself. The radio should just pull out. Sometimes not easy. If that doesn't work, go to a car stero place and they will let you use the tools for free.:D

HTH,

You won't need the Ford tools if it's a Kenwood. But, for those stumbling on this thread who really do need the Ford tools you can use a wire coat hanger. Cut 2 pieces about 6" in length and make "U"s out of them. Put one "U" into each pair holes in the face of the factory radio on either side. Should pull right out.

For the kenwood, you need the flat metal shim-type "tools" to get it out. I was able to get away with a pair of jeweler's screwdrivers on mine - one on each side.
