my 87 we4 is in need of a floor pan getting it done this weekend and im putting in new carpet. I am going to be buying it from gbody, however it asked me about a rubber backing. I know It has the sound damping stuff glued on already but wondering if th e$100 more for rubber backing is really worth it. it is not a show car by anymeans but would like a nice interior. thoughts anyone

FWIW - The rubber back ('mass' backing I think is the word used) is extra stiff at average temps. Both types come with the jute padding but the rubber or mass back might be a bit harder to install. I got help from an experienced hand who made sure the rubber back carpet was warm and relaxed in the sun (& on the asphalt) before install. Even then the foot wells & heel pad stubbornly resisted smoothing. My carpet could have been a poor fit to start, however we assumed it was good as it was ACC brand bought thru a highly recommended vendor on this board. I guess you have a choice to make as sound deadener & heat reduction can be applied with adhesive mats and rhino liner also. I guess I didn't help you much - sorry - so do a SEARCH. There are some threads that have since made me second guess my first carpet replacement. HTH...
