Hey, at least I got the important info correct. ;)

Alan's instructions are almost EXACTLY what we did in our shop, after (much trial and error) which all but eliminated head gasket problems. After the time and money spent in a rebuild why would you want to take a shortcut on something so easy to do on something that is so important to prevent. Do yourself a favor and retorque. At least pull the valve cover and set your torque wrench to your final torque, click as many bolts as you can get to. I have NEVER had a motor with any type of gasket where at least a few didn't change after the first thermal cycle. That will tell you everything you need to know about retorqueing.

I did the dry retorque on the engine stand as suggested in the Champion installation instructions. I did so after letting letting it sit overnight .Even then it was apparent that the gasket had compressed as many of the bolts felt considerably "looser" than when installed.

I have checked and rechecked the studs on the car several times and none have moved. This is after 1 heat cycle and after about 100 miles. My car has no AC so i can reach all of the nuts easily.

I believe this a good alternative if the motor is out and you will be unable to do so with it installed.

Exactly and you are also using GN-1's which makes sense.

Hey Alan...

Sounds to me like we'll be re-torquing the studs on our engine, huh? Once again I am amazed at the depth of your knowledge.
