A rule that has served me well is never, EVER pay a contractor anything up front. I've actually only had a few ask and it was like "Nope, see ya".

I also have that rule but we had used this guy a few times before so we had a prior relationship with him.

u should shorten that up a little Jay cause I dont see many reading thru that entire page and just clicking out of it. wat a scumbag. ive had work done on my house b4 and NEVER pay it all upfront. half now, half when its finished. if the price is too good to be true then it almost always is in my experience. have taken countless eports at work for the same type of cases. very few contractors have pride these days.
