Blew a head gasket the other day. I pulled it apart and it was blown pretty badly on the # 6 cylinder. Had heads checked and they're fine. Was told to pull the oil pan and there was a lot of debris in the oil screen which mashes so I guess it's the head gasket material.

I decided to pull the rod cap on # 6 and the top bearing is down to the copper and the bottom is showing a little copper. The crank looks and "feels" fine.

Should I go ahead and pull her out?\

TIA

I would definitely pull it out if the bearings are worn down that much.

You probably can get by with just new rod and main bearing and a new set of head gaskets. I assume the motor has been rebuilt before?

If not might want to do timing chain, pickup tube, clean out the front cover, delete your oil cooler in the radiator.

It's been rebuilt before, but I don't know when. And neither did the previous owner. It has brass freeze plugs, ARP head bolts, and .030 over pistons. Haven't checked the timing chain yet.

Was hoping not to have to take out the cam and crank sensors. Maybe I can see the timing chain with the oil pan off.

Anything else I should check?

COpper showing on the top bearing alot? Detonation causes this,A blown head gasket pretty much means detonation also
After you freshen this thing, Best recheck the tune very well

If it was running good, it's a lot cheaper and easier to just replace all your bearings. Don't need no "experts" to do that. ;)

Well got the motor out and the main bearings are copper too. Took everything to the machine shop and the crank is fine, but 5 and I mean FIVE of the six pistons were cracked in the skirt. Just my luck.

But, I think I found the problem. DS was not showing any detonation. When I removed the knock sensor it was only still in the block by about 3 or 4 turns. Wasn't even finger tight.

Holy shnikies!

Hopefully the block will still be good-

With all that detonation, please have the block looked at to see if it is cracked where the main bolts hold the caps in place.... Seen 3 this year with hairline cracks in them.
