If I did this more often I would break down and get a pre made fixture but this worked well. Measured big end and little end which added up correctly to the total mass of the rod.
Parts without scale or mag stand cost around $20

I would have tried to use some sort of heim joint set up instead of the chain that's awesome good job
 
The longer you make your chain, the better resolution you'll have.

I sold my rod fixture on Ebay and have a chain hanging from my vaulted ceiling (for the last 5 or 6 years :) ) I turned a disk out of a piece of UHMW the same size as the big end to make sure the pivot point is at the CL of the rod.


My scale is accurate to 1/2 of 100th of a gram so it's a PIA to get repeatable readings. lol
 
It's fancy pants plastic. The neat thing about it is that it's kinda self lubricating.

I built mine out of flat stock friction turned on a lathe. That stuff machines really well. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to make a disk on a mini drill press.
