S 10 rear brake cylinders

Is this true? I put the S10 Wheels cylinders on with the Soft comp pads and they seemed to work great until I noticed a hot brake smell. I pulled the rear wheels off last night and noticed a piece of shoe broken off on the pass. side rear. Is this just a fluke or am I burning up my rear brakes? Do you have to adjust the proportioning valve when you uprage to the S10 wheel cylinders?
