I got back late last night from the Sandhills Open Road Race ( http://SORCrace.com ) and man is it a lot of fun. The Pontiac 2+2 never has run better and we barely lost (2 seconds slow) in the 115 mph class to a 200+ mph Viper (it ran 191 mph in the standing mile on Friday).
Changing the gear ratio to 2.75 from 3.0 and replacing the clutching fan with a Ramchargers dual electric was worth 5 mph in the standing mile (up to 155.3 from last years 150.3).
If anyone is thinking about getting into open road racing, this is the event to attend. The new record for Nebraska's fastest mile was set by a twin turbo viper at 200.0 mph. He also set the unlimited course record at 129 mph.
The '86 2+2 with full interior, power windows and A/C was only 15 mph slower than a $300K full race Viper with 800 HP (and unlike the viper, I wasn't allowed to go faster than 140 mph on the 20 miles of straights).
I'm going to try to posts some videos on my web site from the event.
