I did this a while back and wanted to ask you guys to see if I did it right. The way I did it was pulled the #1 plug out and turned the crank and when it blew my thumb out, I knew it was TDC. Is that right? I didn't have compression tester at hand so I just did it that way. I used a piece of tape that measured 1.45" if I can remember off the top of my head (I have it written down somewhere). Now after I found TDC, I put the tape on 0* mark on the balancer and then turned the crank till the end of the piece of tape and the tab aligned. Then I used the crank sensor tool and turned the crank sensor until the tool just lit up. Did I do it right? I just wanted to make sure. I have heard alot of guys cam sensor is not done right and makes the car run, but run really bad.

Thanks,

Sounds like you got it right to me. The blowing your finger out makes sure you are on the compression stroke. The crank turns twice for every revolution of the cam. when at TDC the number one cylinder is TDC on the compression stroke. You got it right. Have fun.

Just as the piston starts moving downward in the intake stroke (called top dead center, or TDC), the intake valve would open. The intake valve would close right as the piston bottoms out.

Thanks machinegun. I read this on the net and it made me second guess myself. When I put my thumb in the plug hole and it blows it out, that is the compression stroke, right? So this quote is wrong?

Well not really...there are 2 TDC's...compression and exhaust stroke...that quote is exhaust...for TDC compression both valves are closed...

I always thought there was a TDC and a BDC. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
