if i hold my ta49's turbine shaft nut and spin it and listen to the compressor inlet of the turbo i hear what sounds a little like rubbing but the blades to not phisically touch the housing and i believe this to be just the shaft moving around the hole where it goes through from the center section b/c the turbine side does it too. the turbo spins freely and equal force is required all through the turn. it doesnt snag and more force need be applied like it would if a blade was hitting the housing. could what im hearing be the shaft in the hole as i described? also, if i hold the turbine nut and try to wobble it w/some force but not a lot i can see the compressor blades get closer to the housing but not touch. is this normal? when people talk of up and down shaft play do they mean when you spin it you can see it move b/c when it spins it doesnt have any play?

The turbo should have some up and down play. This play get taken up by the oil in the turbo as is running. As you say it should not rub in any way shape or form.

The movement you would want to check on is the thrust play. That is the front and back movement of the shaft in the center section. The easiest way to check for this is to put one finger on the shaft(nut) in the compressor side and another in the exhaust side. Push against your fingers and feel for any thrust movement. It should be fairly tight with almost no movement.
