Shiftey cable

I adjust my Detent (TV) cable to get firm to hard shifts not the knock your head off shifts but you can feel it shifts. Run it down the road floor it and the cable slips = back to soooffftt shifts (not good). I have gone to using a clamp to hold the back side of the cable. Am i missing something or do i need a new cable to resovle? Is it difficult to repalce?

If you are setting the cable so high that it kicks back at WOT then you are setting it to high...If you want firmer shifts you should put a shift kit in it.
