shifting problem

hello again all.ok i just bought this 87 gn 2 weeks ago and i do not like how the tranny shifts,it will not shift into 2nd unless you give the car alot of gas and get speed and rpm up,then by letting off the gas it will shift into 2nd.lets say i am doing 20 mph and gently step on the gas the engine seems to build rpm but the car dont unless you really put your foot more into the gas.i check the fluid and it looks burnt,so i took the car to a town 80 miles from where i live,my folks live there.the mechanic my dad is good friends with got the car on tuesday,and i found out today he hasnt even looked at it,would that make u all mad it did me..............well any advice give would be like always appreciated

One thing that can cause this is if the TV cable is set for too high. If you loosen the cable by a 'click' or two (press the button and slide towards front of car a couple of notches), the problem often disappears.
