Smog with front mount IC?

Buddy of mine said any intercooler is ok for CA smog if the car was originally equipped with one. Really? Kind of obvious with a PTE front mount IC!

Your buddy is correct, even to the point that it doesn't need to be originally equipped with an intercooler. Intercoolers are category 1 emissions controls. Meaning that they are not of concern as long as the required emission controls are connected and functioning.
