Hey Guys,

I have a '84GN, my car is stock, except for upgraded fuel pump, adj. fuel press. reg., gauges and 2.5" Cat-Back Exh. System. I just notice that my car started to smoke abit only when the car is idling at a stop light or stop sign, it does this once in awhile and not all the time, but still its kind of embarrassing :( after accelerating the smoke is gone, but like i said, it does this once in awhile and not all the time, oh sorry the is black and sometimes i smell something burning, something synthetic all info is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance guys. :)

I noticed my TR was having some smoke coming out from the hood area when I stoped at lights. Turned out the rear main was leaking oil on the crossover pipe. Replaced seal when I installed new timing chain, seem's to have taken care of. Hal

hhhhhhmmmmm well i don't get smoke coming from the engine compartment, always from the tail pipes, i just see this puff of smoke coming from the back i do have some knocking, only on heavy acceleration sometimes, but not all the time , but still no smoke only when i'm at a dead stop and the car's idling sometimes, could it be that my fuel pressure is set too high? i think its set at 42lb.? would that be it also? hmmmmm thanks for the replies :)

Change O2 sensor.

Might want to do plugs while your at it. Usually with a fouled O2, it will run rich at idle and foul the plugs while it's at it.

Thanks for the reply, what kind of brand would you recommend or does it really matter? i'm not sure thanks:)

i run Bosch sensors but i'm sure it doesnt matter as I think all O2 sensors end up being made by bosch. (i heard that a while back, don't know if its true)

UPDATE ON MY SMOKING PROBLEM

My car still smokes alittle, samething always when the car is idling at a stop light or at a stop sign, at first i thought it was gas that was burning, but then i really got a good smell of it and it really stinks, it smells really synthetic, i'm still not sure if its the O2 sensor that gone bad, not really sure if its any relations to it, any ideas guys? Thanks in advance:)

I'm betting you have a combination of being too rich at idle like Scott says, with some oil seeping past the turbo bearing into the intake manifold...black smoke, AND stinky...

Thanks for the reply :D i'm hoping it is, i was thinking maybe it might be the piston rings, i'm not sure which is worst

Would you have any suggestions? At this point the car idles and runs fine, but just the occasional puff of smoke, i have the fuel pressure down to about 38lb. and have notice that i am losing alittle oil and a slight knock on heavy acceleration, would that be symptoms? i'm not sure thanks in advance

my car used to smoke at idle but i found out later that turbo was taking a crap on me. I dont think thats your problem though if you dont have noise and humming. do you have oil film on the inside of the pipes? Harry

Hey Guys,

I'm going to have a friend of mine hook up a turbolink to my car, hopefully that will help find the answer to the mystery ;) being that i don't have a scantool yet, still using the stock ecm at the moment, will keep you guys posted if and hopefully we find something and hopefully cure my smoking habit :D thanks for all replies and suggestions

Just a little UPDATE

Hey Guys,

I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but i was talking to a friend of mine and mentioned to him about my smoking problem :D I did tell him that i am leaking a little on the back of the passenger-side valve cover, when i did my exhaust i notice alot of oil around that area and down on the cross-over pipe, he also said that sometimes the oil will seap into the pipe and thats how or why its smoking, something about the pipes are porous and oil leaks through, NOW does that make sense? I've never heard of that one before, but as i mentioned earlier my car doesn't smoke all the time, only once in awhile, only when the car is already idling at a stop sign or stop light, thanks guys

I'm still betting on oil getting into the intake...actually, there's 2 ways this can happen--first is the oil seal on the turbo as mentioned before, and second--if your breather vent tube is still connected from the oil fill tube to the intake tube next to the TB, you could be sucking oil in from there...

However, it makes more sense that the turbo is leaking...because (A) oil WILL cause knocking (as you say you have) and (B) while at idle, the high vacuum will PULL oil thru the seal.

Pretty easy to see if the turbo is leaking. Just let it idle for 5 or 6 minutes, shut it down, remove the intake tubing, then open the throttle wide and shine a flashlight down the throat and see if the turbine blades look oily!

Hmmmmmm very interesting, i will do that and let you know

oh sorry i didn't mention earlier about why i have knocking, i know for one thing i do have a vacume leak somewhere, but can't find it and also, i do have a crack in the driver-side manifold, but yes the oil-filler tube is still connected, i really appreciate all your help, will keep you posted

Hey Guys,
I wish i had done this a long time ago, but it seems that Buick from Hell was right, i capped off the oil filler tube and the intake tube and i've never had any smoke since, cross my fingers :D but seems to be alright for now, thanks for all your input and helpful hints, really appreciate it
