hey all:cool:

So I am looking at starting my own little personal website and I have a few questions.

How is bandwidth for a website figured and what is it?

What does it mean when you get 150GB of data transfer per month?

One of the main features I want to use is, to host my own pictures for eBay, so I do not have to pay them to do it.

I found a place that a family mamber recommended to me where I get 3GB of space and the 150 GB of "data transfer" per month for 10 bucks.

Anything else I should be watching for?

Thanks in advance!

Vic

For $10 a month, your site will be hosted on a server that hosts several other sites, so you will be sharing "bandwidth". If you have a small site, its not a huge deal, especially at that price.

3GB of space is quite a bit for a little site. I had a 45 page site that I designed and it was less than 5 megs. Remember, photos have to be optimized to be fast to download and don't take up a bunch of space on the server.

If you have 1 picture on the site that is 1 gig, and 150 people log onto your site, you have just hit your 150 gig of data transfer, but if you had a 1 gig picture on your site, you'd also be an idiot. Just make sure you're optimizing your photos, and you won't hit the limit of your data transfer. Also be careful with 5 meg videos and all of your friends and family downloading the info, but you'd need about 30,000 people to download a 5 meg file to hit the mark too. I don't think you'll have to worry about the transfer data too much. Just make sure they don't have a bunch of pop-up stuff as part of the package.
