Ok, this might be a long story.

Took the newly aquired GN (87) to the track last Friday. I wasnt happy enough. It's basically a stock car, with only a K&N, slightly better injectors (not sure which, but they appear to have blue stripes), new turbo-inlet and MAF pipe. The friend I bought it from had never really beat on it at all, but said it -should- turn a high 13. With this in mind, I dumped about 5 gallons of Sunoco 94 octane in the tank (to about half tank), and took it on down. I have only raced one of these cars once, that was a friend of my fathers. He was turning 13.9's in it. I launced with too much boost and it spun, fishtailing to a horrid 2.8 second 60' time, and a 14.6. Obviously I have a lot to learn, even though I've studied these cars for so many years.

Only managed two passes, since it was so crowded with rice at the track, but my second, and best run was only 14.55 @ 93.41. Street tires & stock GN rims. The first run was a tad slower, and I figured it might have spun, but that wasnt the case. I tried to launch with more boost, but I cant read the gauge [aftermarket one in console] cause it was dark and not wired to lights. The 60' time improved from a 2.2 to a 2.1, so it obviously wasnt spinning. It wont hold too much w/o breaking the tires loose, as they started to while the amber lights were tripping down.. I launched with it in OD, which I shouldnt have, and I didnt use the TCC lockup at all because I just plain forgot to flip the switch.

With those two things in mind, I'll try those next time, but is there anything I can do to improve on this? Stock turbo and stock chip. I was thinking of trying out a Thrasher chip for now,.. maybe the 92 so I can run it on the street. However, I have stock fuel press reg, and they specify the need for an adjustable or one of the others. Any boost tips? Reasons why it wont hold much on the line w/o spinning the tires? Cheap tweaks, or no-cost tweaks I can do under the hood? It may be holding a few psi honestly, but as I said, I cant read the gauge in the dark yet. Any tips are welcomed.

Also: It is a heavy car. Fully loaded with p/w, p/l, p/seats,....

get some sticky tires(drag radials would be a good start), a good fuel pump (hot wired) adjustable regulator, a good race chip and some 100 octane fuel

with street tires, all that other stuff will likely go to waste because you will be doomed to very poor 60' times due to lack of traction (the more power you make, the bigger the traction problem becomes....)

Sticky tires are a must.

If Sunoco 94 is available or another 93 octane brand that you prefer that is all that should be used in the car.

Soft compound rear brake shoes and turned drums will help hold some boost.

160 thermostat

All the free mods. such as intercooler cleaning and intake tract cleaning with GM top engine cleaner will help.

A good chip and adj. reg. and Walbro 340 are a must. Hot wire can be done cheaply enough.

Yep... thats all the things I plan to do so far.

I already have the 160 degree thermostat. And if I get better rear brakes to hold boost, I'll obviously have to hook up some linelock to do any tire heating/smoking.

Where can I get info on the Walbro fuel pumps? They have a website? Or a number where I can get a catalog? If anyone has this info, please hook me up. I'll definately be needing it here soon.

Thanks for the replies.

Buy a fuel pump from one of the vendors from this site. Ramchargers or Racetronics are good.

When tuning the car concentrate on improving the MPH. Run in drive, not OD. Flip the TCC lock up switch right after your burnout. use a scan tool that monitors knock and watch for it on the shifts. If you see knock add more octane in the form of racegas or xylene. A 237 regulator from a front drive regal in the junkyard will allow the use of Thrasher chips. A T100 or T108 with the appropriate octane will provide mucho power compared to what you are currently experiencing. Improve the exhaust system with free flowing mufflers or a dump. Use an airbag and sticky tires for better traction. etc, etc.

Stay consistant, develop patterns and mental checklists and don't change too much all at once. If you are constantly learning what make the car fast and what slows a car down, you will go increasingly faster.

Alright.. I've taken note of all this. Now its budget time.. slowly but surely.

Traction isn't my problem right now. It's acceleration. The run I was talking of about tire spin on the launch was a friends car. Mine seems to hook right up, since I dont think I can hold too much boost anyway. I'm wiring that damn gauge to the lights so I can see it next time.

A ScanMaster is definately in my future, but for $250, it may be a while. Where do they connect in the car? ALDL port? Is it a connector plug or a wire-in deal?

Just out of curiosity. I checked my tires all around yesterday, and they were seriously low on air, so I filled them back up to spec. The front tires (call for 35 psi) were down to 20, and the rears were at 29 or 30, which wouldnt be much of a problem, since it might actually limit spin. I didnt notice the fronts at the track in the dark. Could that also take off some very slight MPH? Or no...

Your car is mphing fine considering all the mistakes you made (no l/u, o/d, crappy chip, no race gas, no boost, crap tires) If you cant afford a SM2 at least get a knock gauge so you dont blow her up while your trying to save $$$
