1.Why a fuseable link to the ECM instead of a fuse?
2. If the link burns out shouldn't the insulation melt?
3. I just had mine go out. The orange wire was broken inside the insulation right where it enters the Black cylinder. Is it possible it's just a physical break from years of bending and vibration? It didn't look melted and I checked the rest of it. Nothing bare or anything for it to short onto. I jury rigged it to get home.

Probably have to get Doc Brown to take you Back to the Future in 1987 and ask the engineers. :) I don't think it is a fusible link. Just get a little shrink tubing and solder that connection back together.
 
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's just a physical break. I drove around for an hour and made some pulls after I jury rigged it with no problems. I'll just solder it.
