'm looking for a new lower half speedometer cable. Mine refuse to separate so before I try and force it, I would like another one in hand. The jumping speedometer is making me crazy. Everyone says to lube it, but don't tell you how to get it down in the cable.

You have to take it apart to get it down in the cable, to do this uncouple the link where the upper and the lower conect together under the hood, and then undo it at the tranny as well. When you undo it at the tranny end the cable will stick out of the end of the housing. Simply grab hold of it and slowly slide it all the way out of the black housing. Apply speedo grease all over the metal cable then slowly insert it back into the housing and reassemble the halves together and hook it back up to the tranny. Then Id grease the upper one as well but I cant remember if the cable pulls out of the housing from the speedo end or the under hood end.

I actually completely removed the lower cable from the car and I see the trans end sticking out. The cable refuses to come out and is binding when I turn it. The upper section going to the cluster spins freely. The lower end is definitely binding and refuses to come out. I would simply like to replace the lower half if I can. If the wire would come out of the cable, I would lube it, but it refuses to come out and I'm worried about breaking it and then having nothing.

Did you uncouple the two cables from one another? And its been a while since Ive mest with my cable maybe it comes out from the under hood side. I cant remember.

I have the lower cable literally on the floor in my garage. I pulled it out of the car because I thought it would be easier to work on. It's definitely easier to replace at this point. The engine side just shows the female connection. The trans side shows the wire stick out, but it refuses the separate from the cable and with my luck lately, that SOB will break in the middle if I try to force it out.

Id just get a new cable then. Im sure you will be able to find anything from used to new fast on this board.

on the lower cable, you have to remove retaining washer on the top of lower cable, pry it out w/ small screw driver, but hold on to it,once washer is out, slide out cable, lube it,slide it back, put retainer back,..just did mine

I did it this morning and your description was 100% accurate. It came right out. I lubed it this morning and slid it back in. I also used my drill and spun it a little bit to make sure it wasn't binding. Then I pulled it out and lubed it again. It spins much better and doesn't bind at all.

Thanks alot
