Spring cups..

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the spring cups on stock valve springs?

I know most toss'em when they swap springs.

Do they keep too much oil from going down the exhaust valve guide?

Good info,nothing was said about oil control. New springs have internal dampers we are good there.

I run the comp 979's springs on my flat tappet cam cars, so they do need the cups, K motion 750's on my rollers cams and they do not need the cups.

I don't use cups on flat tappits. I have the machine shop use shims if necessary to get the pressures right. Generally don't go any stiff than 90 psi closed pressure,sometimes a little less.

On my rollers I use behives. I usually buy Mikes kits and they come with'em.
