I've got some Spyware/tracking cookies on my computer. I downloaded the free programs- Adware, PC Tools and Malware. The laptop has been running slow recently.

Adware found it but says can't remove it.

PC Tools found it but can't remove it unless I pay for the subscription.

Didn't do the Malware.

I have the free version of AVG for anti-virus, etc, etc. I finds but does not do anything.

So.....do I have to pay for a subscription? If so, which one should I get.

Thanks

Billy T.

When it said it cant remove it did it list the files it couldnt remove? If it did you can change the name of the files it couldnt remove to .doc and save them on your desktop. Then after you re-boot you can easily delete them. You could run just about any of those programs and they usually list all the bad files. You can go and delete them one at a time but the malwarebytes seems to take care of most of them.

HiJackThis is a good program, I've used it many times too. Once you get your log file from the scan, paste it in the box at HijackThis Logfileauswertung and it will analyze it for you and let you know which processes are potentially harmful.

Thanks, I've used HijackThis for ages but have never done this. They scanned my log file and said I have no anti-virus running, which I do. My firewall is off, which it's on. And they don't like my Microsoft mouse driver. LOL... ;)

I used this per Jays suggestion, Antivirus Software: Kaspersky Lab - Protection Against Malware and Cybercrime
That is some Russian stuff there:biggrin: It seems to have worked, I have one problem remaining, I think a trojan virus wiped out part of my registry so I am going to try to FIX XP through the disk!

Like Adam said though, get a big external HD and save all your important stuff!

Good luck buddy!

Sage advice,IMO.
I like Kaspersky A/V and S/W Doctor [I run them both on both machines].
Eugene Kaspersky works from the premise that M/Soft does not know how to write an operating system.
He *may* be right.:D
Don't get me started on that pile of crap Norton.
It recently caused problems with a number of computer's settings.

I am using Kaspersky also, just upgraded from antivirus 2007 to antivirus 2009. I got a flag installing it that spybot search and destroy is not compatible with Kaspersky 2009. Up till then, I used spybot, adaware, along with Kaspersky 2007, and had ZERO issues. Kaspersky 2009 now supports Malware, anti-Phishing, and virus protection. We'll see how it goes, it's a jungle out there!

x2 Norton..Bad!!..We have the corp edition at work and what a piece of dung this thing is. I can't tell you how many times I have to have my engineers re-image a HD becuase this software is a sieve. I have 4 other PC's that thankfully the vendor won't allow us to instal Norton because they run Trend Micro. Guess which PC's have never been re-imaged and are exposed to more threats from station employee's researching information. I run Trend myself, and have only had one problem during a install and I called tech support and was fixed quickly. I know nobody like paying for antivirus/malware software, but think of it this way, what's your time worth not to have to screw with this? I will gladly pay the 60 bucks for a 3 pack license.

The other thing I like about trend is that it seems like it updates almost everyday with some sort of updated virus pattern. Yes it can be annoying at times, but the program works and keeps my PC's protected.

OK,
Reboot into safe mode and run it. That will keep many of the "protections" built into the virus from running. I have been using AVG for more than nine years and it does catch stuff, even the free version.

Download and run this to clean up root kits.

AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Virus Removal

If AVG is still giving you the fits, grab the latest version from free.grisoft.com.

I was lucky enough to save my personal laptop, fiance's is not so lucky! The virus it got cut off internet connectivity, which stopped AVG from being able to update etc. I am going to try and boot it up and get her pics off of it this weekend then reformat. What a pain!

What is the computer doing? Seems fine except for anything on the internet? There is a fix for AVG if you lose internet and email.
