I think it was just because of the fab work involved. As you can see the pan is so wide, they use those bungs and plugs. You remove the plug, bolt the pan to the block through the hole (praying you don't drop the bolt), then use the plug to fill the hole. Crazy looking setup, never saw them until started learning about dry sump setups.
