Was changing the positive battery cable last night and trying to get the lead off the starter when the entire stud turned before I got the nut to loosen maybe 1/2 turn. It tightened back up ok.
Is this common or a problem?
Thanks.

Change the soliniod to be sure. I've seen them break when that happens and the soliniod is a cheap part rather than get stranded.;)

What breaks in them?
I thought it just a contact pole that was threaded through the cap.

The cap usually cracks and then causes starter issues. Water can get in it and create corrosion and contact problems.

pull the plastic cap off the end of the solenoid and look it over. you used to be able to just buy a cap out of the Standard catalog that used to be behind the counter of every parts store..
