Is there an easy way to hook up a starter switch so I can crank the engine from under the hood? I'm trying to diagnose a problem, but my girlfriend is getting tired of turning the key. I need to be able to crank the engine by myself. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Captrob

Well..

There is no "easy" way to hotwire your starter,I could tell you how to do it but in the end you'd be better off finding someone willing to just turn the damn key.

Starting engine while underhood

Rob,

Most parts shops have "remote" starter with push-botton made just for what you need. It consist of a couple wires with clips and a push-botton.

Thanks HellOnWheels

I'll look for one. I saw one in Summit just today. I guess I'll hit the electrical diagrams to see how to hook it up.
Thanks, CaptRob

"bump sw"

All that's needed is a pushbutton sw that's normally open. Something w/ a reasonable amp rating.
One side goes to batt +, the other goes to the solenoid wire on the starter. When you want to start the engine, turn the key to run,[no GF needed for that!] push the button and the engine will turn over. Let go of the button when it starts. [or doesn't:mad:]
I have mine,[weatherproof cover] permanently mounted under the hood above the coil pak. [Can reach it from both sides of the engine] I use it to bump the engine to set the valves...
I also unplug the Powermaster switch while under the hood w/ the key on.. no point in cycling the pump...;) ;)

More trivia from far too many hours under the hood!!

I use a remote starter which I got at Pep Boys...clip one wire to the big terminal on starter solenoid and the other to the small terminal...can crank engine at will with ignition off...I use it mainly when checking compression...
