As the title says, my steering box seems to be leaking a bit. What's the process to r & r and is there any particularly nice ones out there you prefer over stock?

Thanks in advance

R&R is pretty easy. The only hard part is getting the arm off.

A meaty pickle fork and a 5lb sledge at a minimum. An arm puller would probably work too :)

A "meaty pickle fork"?
Yum.....sounds delicious!.

We sell the correct quick ratio YA code steering box rebuilt no core required kirbanperformance.com not sure of our prices as I am at home. Else where you need to be certain you are getting the correct steering box reason is most of those steering boxes look the same on the exterior so be sure whatever part number auto store gives you its is the one for the GN suspension (exact terminology escapes me). We sell a Cardone unit and I have all Cardone books reason I know we sell the correct one.

We do no require a core either.

Lee Manufacturing used to sell blueprinted rebuilt units for our cars--Don't know if they are still around?

I bought Kirban's. Great product for a $150. Talk to Scott from GNS he recommend it to me. Also, since you have it apart go with the Detroit speed steering shaft kit and a power steering pump with resevoir.

I'm definitely calling Kirbans for the box. I just don't see a reason to upgrade my shaft and pump for a total cost of over 500 when they look and seem to be fine. I have a couple other issues where the money would be better spent, unfortunately.

Boston: could you let us know how difficult this project is and if there are noticeable results in steering performance?

Thanks....

No problem. Not sure when I'll get to it. Car's going into the body shop soon, so probably the spring. Like I said, I'm only doing the steering box. Mine seemed fine with very little play, but it started weeping a bit. I went out to check on the car since there a are a few here who had coolant issues in the bitter cold. I noticed there was a bit more fluid on the box itself so I decided that needs to be changed. The box from Kirban is a stock replacement, so I'm not sure how it could get any better. If I went with the shaft from DSE, then It would probably help out a bit. The job seems easy enough from looking at it. Couple lines, steering shaft, lower arm, couple bolts. At least, I hope it's that easy, lol
