I can't find the answer to this anywhere on this board??? Is it the lock plate?

I think my steering wheel got jerked counter clockwise when the ignition lock was on and now the steering wheel can move several inches clockwise or counter clockwise (assuming the limiting factor is the horn wire?). I checked and the shaft / rag joint does not move.

The problem is not the tilt / torx problem. Fixed that a while ago.

Steering problem wasn't bad at first, but it got worse and now it will hardly steer to the left...

TIA!

There is a plastic knuckle connection about 6 inches below steering wheel that probably is broken. The whole column would have to be disassembled to repair. The parts are not going to be easy to find. Might be better off with replacemnet column

argh...

looks like it was the Grant steering wheel adapter (pot metal). I will post pics.

The aftermarket adapters will strip and or crack. Didnt know it had grant wheel .

lock bolt / shaft lock is fine

most upper part of steering shaft (where the hex jam nut / retainer are that holds the wheel on) is fine

Then I guess there are two parts of the upper shaft. One with small grooves (and cut in half), and one with large grooves. The one with the small grooves (and cut in half) looks to be ok. Maybe some dirt. The one with the large grooves is also OK, but it is filled with metal shavings. There are also metal shavings all around the upper shaft. Especially just beneith it (gravity).

The pic of the adapter is not so good, but you can see the large grove part is almost completely smooth. The small grove part is very worn down.

Might as well replace the turn signal cancelling cam assembly and turn signal switch assembly while I am in there. They are both broken also.

well odd that I would click on this thread by accident but if you havent fixed the problem yet send me an email. I bought a car that the previous owner tried to fix the tilt on and all the bearings are now laying on my floor:D. Ill send you the entire coloumn for parts because I have no need for it anymore. send me a conversation if your interested.

Thanks for the offer. I don't think I will need anything else. But will message you if I do.
