Steering wheel spokes have what looks like rust spots all over. Whats a good way to clean them up without a big mess?

Thanks

Tape off to protect the leather and hit the rust with a small diameter brass wire wheel with a variable speed drill.Give it a good coat of metal polish and should be good to go.

I'll give it a shot. Any advice on cleaning up the alumium door sills? They are not pitted, but look kinda like water spots, but don't wash off.

Thanks

sure,if you got a bench grinder, slap a buffing wheel on it and give it a whirl,(pardon the pun!)My D/S had some scratches in it but depending on which rouge you use they will come out.Don't sit in one spot too long though you will flatten out the ridges in the metal...Ask me how I know that:mad:
Sears hardware has a decent starter set for buffing items, but like powerwashing,it gets addictive!!

Have a bench grinder with a buffer, do you use polish too, or just the buffer?

Thanks

For the steering wheel I would use just a little metal polish first. The spokes of the steering wheel have a textured finish to them and using any sort of a wire wheel might cause harm to the textured finish.

I agree, should have mentioned about the polish first but when I tried the polish it still left some faint rust marks on it.But for sure the brass wheel is softer than a regular wheel and it left no marks when used with a low, variable speed drill. And yes,I used mothers on the door sills afterward to remove any residue and give it a better shine.

I am going start out with my Dremel and Mothers and see how it goes.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks

I used white rouge polish on mine with a little elbow grease and rag, comes right off, looks great. I also use this white rouge polish on my GNX look a like rims, I have these rims looking like they were chrome with this polish.

Mothers did pretty darn good, but don't wear a white tee shirt. It took a whole bunch off, but still see a few white spots (small size of a pin head) hear and there. you can run your finger nail across them and doesn't feel like it is pitted. Is the rouge more abrasive than Mothers?

Thanks

The white rouge I made is a bit grittier than mothers polish, but gentle enough not to leave any scratches in the metal.

Might be worth a try, avaiable at auto prats places, or something special

Is it available at the likes of Advanced Auto, etc, or a special order item?

Joe,
Good call, I'll get some. Thought I might have over extended my welcome with all the PM's we been doing on the important problems. The sills and wheel spokes are a mild diversion.

Thanks
Russ

you may want to try steel wool and some quick detailer first, worked for me.
