How reliable is the stock tach? My is going into the red alot, I know the boost gauge below it differs from the VDOgaige by 5 pounds or more.
Should I be worried?

Im sure every car is differenrt but my GN's tach is about 250 rpm high in relation to my autometer tach. Not to bad. Its one light off.

Hi,

I would just as soon hang a disco light of the rear view mirror as use the factory tach and boost gauge.

Later,
John

They are completely useless for anything more than entertaining passengers. If you're serious, get real gauges.. :D

I wouldn't discount or praise either too quickly. I've even noticed a discrepancy between my Autometer and the Scanmaster of approx. 150 rpm at a steady cruise. My stock tach is as close the aftermarket. I suppose it varies car to car.

my stock tach is only 200 rpms off what turbolink says...a long time ago my stock boost and tach gauges went out and i have them replaced (the circuit boards i am guessing) so maybe that helped...i have seen some guys cars that read like 3000 rpms at idle!!!

I've seen several that would redline at anything over idle. Meaning that at 2000 rpm the thing showed 5000 rpm. I've never seen one even close. Mine dash is digital so I don't have to worry about it.

Mine was about 1200 r.p.m. off oposed to Scanmaster.

Calibrating the stock gauges would be an excellent choice for those maintaining or restoring a "stock" GN.

in the meantime, don't trust the fact. gauges.

The stock tachs are very reliable. About 95 out of 100 are guaranteed to go up when you step on the gas. As far as being accurate. Doubt it. Boost: same thing.
