was searching for a thread describing the stock turbos and how to inspect. Having a hard time getting past all the aftermarket stuff. Thought I would post a few pics and go from there. Was wondering about the 0.6 a/r as I read that the stock turbo was 0.65? Confused is all I am at this point, need some opinions from the knowledgeable.
Turbo spins smooth, and has no play whatsoever. No visible damage to vanes, and that is about all I can see. I guess there is no oil in the intake side as well, unlike my kawasaki 750 turbo, where all the oil ends up.

The A/R 60 you are seeing is for the compressor housing and is not commonly discussed. The exhaust or turbine housing is a garret .63 A/R and the turbine housing is one that you always see being talked about....... You can tell that yours is stock by the mismatch on the inlet bell and the machined step further in on the compressor housing....... The stock turbo is capable of around 375 rear wheel HP, I made a bit more than that with other engine mods but most dont bother with the stock one and upgrade to something better and their are many choices these days....... Back when I maxed mine out there really were not any good turbo upgrades available.....since your end play is good and you have no oil leakage the turbo is good assuming it spools up properly.........what are you looking to do with your car?

Have the block(87) at machine shop right now, it is going to end up using the stock pistons as the engine only had about 50k km; the crankshaft required only a polish. I am currently researching camshafts, and have figured out a handful of things that my machinist and I are going to do with an eye towards reliability. It will get driven hard, but not drag raced.

Will be making a touring car to drive through the mountains in B.C. The most important thing will be the chassis more than anything. Car is going frame-off and to the body shop (estimated at $3500 before paint) for dec.1st. Frame and drivetrain will be worked on by me while body being done. Willing to spend on the build of the car, not trying to do it on the cheap. My labor is the cheap part.

Having said all that, I would be happy to see anything over 350hp. So I was planning a pretty mild setup compared to most here. If I need more hp, then it would be nice to only have to upgrade the turbo in the future.
