My 109,000km 1986 Grand National needs a new exhaust. The muffler is totally gone, and the cat back pipes look like they are about to rust through, as well.

So...

I've been doing some looking around on the net, and have found a couple of cat-back systems for the car.

Flowmaster Force II #F1317102 for about $322

Hooker Super Comp cat back $481

I don't want to spend a whole lot of money. Looking for the opinions of fellow owners. When your factory exhaust gave out, what did you replace it with?

And remember, I'm on a budget (the wife is pretty angry about TWO fun cars, she thinks two people and four cars is excessive  )

Thanks.

Summit Racing should have the 2.5" inch Hooker exhaust (part number 16801) for right around $350.00 shipped. I have put one on each of my cars and loved them. Not much drone, raspy sound, factory exits.

I agree.. Go with the Hooker catback. Ive been running this system on my car for 4 years now. Sounds great, didn't cost too much and no annoying drone!!!

Mike Licht sells one but I will forwarn you...it drones at 18-2200 RPM's...

Hooker all the way!

My 2.5" Hokker cat back sounds great and it's very quiet. I can actually hear the engine when I get on it. Just be patient installing it, I kind of boogerd mine up on the one side.

Hooker

I just put the Hooker system on my GN yesterday. Got it from Summit for $360 shipped. Fits nice, sounds terrific. It has Aerochamber mufflers are nearly a straight through design but they are quiet and no drone.

I had good luck with the Hooker system I installed on my other GN back around 1992 so I went with it again.

I have the hooker system on my turbo as well. Its been on there several years now without a problem.
However, I will warn you to be careful of the mounts. I dont know if the problem has ever been rectified with the hangers, but the ones that I had come with mine were not up to the task of holding it up. The hooker system is a heavy setup, and you need really good hangers to keep it up. Other than that, its a great system, and long lasting.

I just had a local shop (I always recommend them) to just run a 3" exhaust from dp to magnaflow to single tip just behind the wheel. Cheap - sounds good - and if youw anted it super quite, jsut throw a resonator in there too...

the car sounds much better in person - I can't even hear the car while cruising at 45...60's a bit loud, but 70 is fine.

Or run open exhaust like I am on my Rx-7 :P

the rough idle is because the car is leaking fuel bad - it cout out at 6k on first run...should be good to rev well past 8....

Imho

Cottons ss is the best, and the cheapest in the long run, if you plan on keeping your car longer than 10 years. Looks and sounds great too.

Hooker...w/dynomax Mufflers Sounds nice a lil bit choppy at idle can't even hear at WOT......real nice and cheap......but yes the hangars are a MoFoe'r

A friend just picked me up the Flowmaster kit, for a fantastic price, about half what the Hooker set up costs. So, we are going to put it on this weekend. I can't justify spending the price of the Cotton kit, no matter how nice it is. Thanks guys.

I've got the Force II kit, looks pretty similar to that. Bolted up without too much difficulty. The exhaust on the car when I bought it wasn't original. Sound is about the same as before (minus the banging from the rusted out muffler!). This is my first V6, so I don't have any points of reference for how it should sound. There seems to be a little more midrange power, but that could be wishful thinking. Overall, seems to be a good quality exhaust, and the price was right. For a solid driver (which is what this GN is) I'm happy with my choice.
