TA-49 rebuild?

I recently purchased a used TA-49 and would like to have the center freshened prior to installing it. Any recomendations ? Anything I should look for in or on the turbo itself to be sure it's o.k.?

How did the prievious owner describe the condition of the turbo? Was it smoking when it was removed? Look at the exhaust side and see if there is any evidence of burnt oil, do the same for the compressor side and look for fresh oil. This will indicate a bad/blown oil seal.

You can also look the shaft in play. Make sure that there is NONE. If you have shaft play that would indicate a bad thrust bearing. A rebuild will cost around $275-$370.

The previous owner said no smoke, and the turbo doesn't show any of the signs of oil leakage. The inside of the exhaust side has a small crack in it where the wastegate hole meets the turbine area. There is no thrust in it. The only thing that kind of concerns me is some small dents on the intake side fins. They are very small and don't seem to affect anything. Should I not be such a worry wart and just put the thing on as is? If you were going to have it rebuilt who would you recommend? The exhaust side is off being performance coated with my downpipe, so it just seemed like a good time to do it. Maybe I'll bring it with me to the dyno shop on sat. and have you look at it first person. Thanks A

Bringing it on Saturday would be best. If the previous owner didn't have a problem with it then I'm sure you'll be ok to install it. See you on Saturday.
