Not knowing too much about it and just thinking out loud, I'm thinking I'd like to upgrade from stock to a ta-49. This for a street car with supporting mods found in my sig. I'd like a non journal bearing upgrade since I'd rather not have to buy another converter and I hear the bb versions spool quicker. Am I thinking correctly? Is it possible to have my stocker redone to ta-49 specs? Any input is appreciated.

5857 BB wish they had the air cooled bearing when I did mine ,but no issues with the water cooled .@ 100%stock 96mph 258HP .first year with 5857 stock converter cam air box and turbo elbow & crappy 3in down pipe TT 42Lb. Butt dino was 500 Hp track facts was 101mph 300 HP.BUT a ta49 & converter are about the same cost as a 5857 bb billet.Cost verses Reword has been debated several times.with stock converter it was a noticeable improvement.

bb is no substitute for a converter period.to put a real number down on a 49 or a 58/57bb you will still need a converter or loosen the stall on the stock d5.and i doubt a 58/57bb with a pte.63 on a stock converter will spool any faster than a 49 with a garrett.63.hate to see this guy spend that kind of coin and not have the whole combo.

John I see you did some price checking maybe ALKY will be your next investment? It will be mine,Like Mr,Spool said I would like to see some numbers about spool speed between the 49 44 &5857 there was none when I bought mine,(no compressor maps ether)I put my trust in Patrick at PTE It was $$ but Im vary happy.I also figured if this new technology was good enough for the imports how could it hurt me.And if stock appearing is not important there seems to be more 44s out there.Spool is correct coin and combo have to match,I keep looking to the board for help, and have made my own mistakes.I like my 5857 and it will go 11.90 this summer.Keep on searching

The Stocker you have will cost as much to change to TA49 specs as what you can buy a new TE44 for from a couple of the vendors on this board. If you hit the for sale section TE44 and TA49's can be had for a good price I would always advise though when buying used to have some one check it out for you unless of course you can check out yourself.

ta-49 with a tight garrett.63 ex housing and a restalled converter.

I wouldn't worry about a restall. My best 60ft on the stock converter with my TE44 was 1.61, then I snapped an axle. The spool difference was 200rpm.

Good advice. I would open it up and make sure the bearings weren't chewed up with bearing material. For the price difference, I'd buy a new one.

That all sounds like good advice guys, but if the price of admission is $1200 then I have to pass. I know very little about the subject matter other than what I've read here, and as I stated in the first post I'm just pondering the difference in spool time with the bb journals. My build is not complete yet (!) so this is all cart before the horse anyway. I fully expect to add alky. Speaking of that, and maybe a bit off topic, but would it be better to complete my build with the stock injectors and chip or go ahead and install the #60's and get a TT chip? This is a 77k motor with stock internals, with dp, exhaust, and LS1 maf/translator (base model). It's in a hybrid, but the dash/engine/ecm have been swapped in, so in theory anyway it's plug and play. I am working alone with no buddies and whatever I have learned has been here and gnttype. I just don't know if I should keep the variables to a minimum for the initial fire up, or if the injector change wouldn't hurt.

at least two vendors are advertising the TE44 at 599.00. Keep in mind you will have to either modify your stock actuator or buy a new one for a TE44.

I purchased from this site a polished TE44 I tore it down and inspected, replacing the bearings and seal (30.00 kit) all for less than 225.00. I also welded bracket to stock actuator for fit on TE style Turbo.

These are the least expensive options I have found. If you can find a good Used TA49 it will cut expensis in regards to using stock actuator.

60#=10.50

Is this your goal? this is from the TT web page.I don't believe a stock turbo and converter will support 10.50.Track rules made my build slower than 11.50.that was my goal and I stuck with it.

I'm a skeptic by nature, so I usually assume the worst about used parts. I mean, if it works why would I replace it in the first place? As far as the #60's go, I got them for a good price when Full Throttle had them on sale. My goal is 11.50 in a car I can drive anywhere with A/C. Mainly I just wanted to see if I could pull off the build. Lol, so far it's winning. Thanks for the input everyone.

I don't see ally in your signature. Get razors kit and turn up the boost on the stock Turbo.
