I have both of these turbos, and while comparing them the only differences I can see are that the compressor wheel has one extra blade, and with the compressor cover off the inside of the wheel is about an 1/8" bigger. The exhaust wheels look identical. Does this sound right? Thanks. Dave

A ta49 is actually a 5831. You likely have a 6131. The 6131 wont do anything over a 5831 unless you are going to crank it way up. Imo the 6131 is a mismatch of wheels. The 61 compressor will move over 600hp worth of air but the 31 trim ex wheel hits a lot of back pressure over 500hp with a 3 bolt. I made nearly 500whp with a 6176. Same comp wheel as your 61 but the largest ex wheel the 61 came with. I had a Garrett .63 ex housing too.

So you're saying the TA61 is prob. a 6131? Does that mean 61mm compressor wheel, and 31mm exhaust wheel? With the 49 at around 26-27psi with 116 octane I keep getting knock, and I was hoping the bigger turbo would help a little. Like maybe I was pushing the 49 too hard? Thanks...

It means 61 mm compressor and 31 trim ex. Id verify base timing if your getting knock at those boost levels. You may have more timing than you think. I ran 26-27 to make about 500whp with the 6176. i used 93/alky. 116 is a lot more forgiving than 93/alky and will tolerate a lot more boost/timing if the bottom end can take it. I dont see the 6131 making more than 1-1.5mph more at the same boost levels. If you went to a p trim (76 trim) you would pick up a lot more than the 1-1.5mph. Fwiw the 65 trim ex wheel replaces the 76 trim and will make even more power than the 76. The 49 will run 120+ before its a problem

It sounds like you have a TE60. Same compressor as a 61 (59 mm 7 blade), and the same turbine as a TA49, T31.

This community has to ditch using the part #'s for turbine wheels as it's too confusing for most tuners. Who cares if they call a 57mm exhaust wheel a T31?

OP, here is what you have

TA49 and TA61 in your case are
58/57 61/57

Both turbos will spool identical and like Bison said as you crank up the 61 it will separate itself from the 58 more and more.

Run the TA61 and most likely you're lean if you're knocking on 116.

With the 49 I was running 25* timing. I was about 11.8 on the wideband with about 4-5* KR. I turned up the overall fuel with the chip for my next pass which brought my a/f to 10.9, but it had the same amount of KR, and the same MPH... I didn't get any more passes after that, and I have not pulled a plug yet either... Thanks..

When is the knock coming in, after the launch, on a shift or hopefully not at the end of the 3rd gear run?

I'd imagine that if you had real knock with that timing and psi in 3rd, you'd have blown a head gasket on the 2nd run.

It was at 27.5 psi, and started getting retard at the end of 2nd gear. The wideband showed about 10.8 the whole run. The Narrow band was around .740. The Kr was goin from 2-6 until the the torque converter locked than it was going from 3-9. That's when I let off...

Verify your timing. Your reluctor ring is likely off a couple degrees. You may have 27-28* timing

How do I go about checking my timing? Do you mean with a timing light? Thanks. Dave.
