TH-400 int. sprag

What horspower level is it nessessary to go from a roller spag to a element sprag in a TH 400?
I know through th '80's they ran roller sprags in 1 ton chev tow trucks dont remember ever seeing one fail.

I never build a with a roller clutch set up for a performance vehicle.

There was an era when the intermediate sprag for the 400 was of questionable quality and were flipping relatively quickly. With a couple customers, I switched their setups to a roller clutch to get them by. They did last surprisingly long for a roller clutch. Longer than the sprags at the time were lasting. But eventually one, that I know for sure, did fail. You have more of a mess too, when a roller clutch fails. At the time, the Super sprag option was not invented yet, so all we could do was wait for the quality of the sprags to come back around.
