Lots of cars and trucks did.Easy way to tell a th350 from a th400 is that the vac modulator is on the back of a 400 vs the side for a 350. HTH

if i wanted to buy one used lets say from a junk yard which car or truck would be best to use.

?

Early to mid 70s buicks, pontiacs, and ,olds any of these should have what you are looking for, just watch for tailshaft lenght, your preference on the lenght.

Actually, if you could score one from a 1966-1972 vehicle, you'll get the better intermediate sprag assembly. 1973 & later went to a weaker roller clutch. Additionally, you can then easily upgrade the stock 16-element sprag to an aftermarket 34-element unit.

Later transmissions can also be upgraded but that entails replacement of the entire drum assembly.

As Under Pressure mentioned, try for a Buick, Olds, Pontiac (or Cadillac) transmission as they will have the proper bellhousing bolt pattern for the Buick engine. If you find a killer deal on a Chevy unit, an inexpensive adapter is readily available to bolt it to a Buick engine.

Try to find a transmission with a 'C' tailhousing. It's the shortest of the three TH400s produced at 28 3/8" long. The 'C' is cast directly into the tailhousing.

the early units are calibrated for numerically high final drives, but the drum will usually be scored even if it is the sprag type.better off finding the latest unit possible,aa codes, and start there.a good early core will usually have a bad hi drum,a non heat treated stator shaft and a worn out rear planetary.a good drum is only 100 bucks with a new 34 element sprag so its your best bet if you want something younger.when i was 20 i wasnt chasing 50 year olds.later, the rumble of the subway is keeping me from getting any sleep.anyone want to talk politics,i cant sleep.

by the way we get 150 for a good core allk parts guaranteed.i dont know where in ny you are but try the local wreckers for aa code seville units .

do you have any good 400's laying around if so how much .this message is to C.K
